4. Copy to the top level of the card the downloaded �BD700103.bin� (B firmware) file.
5. Disconnect camera from the computer.

8. At completion of upgrade turn the camera off.
9. Re-format Card.

Upgrading the D70 Firmware
The D70 has two sets of firmware, A and B, which must be updated separately.

Thank you for choosing a Nikon product. This guide describes how to upgrade the camera firmware for the D70. If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon service representative.
Get ready
To upgrade the firmware for the D70, you will need:
� A D70 digital camera
� UC-E4 USB cable OR a Compact Flash (CF) card reader
� One of the following power sources:
� An EH-5 AC adapter
� A fully-charged EN-EL3 rechargeable battery
� A Nikon-approved Compact Flash (CF) memory card that has been formatted in the D70 (do not use Microdrive cards).

Check the current firmware version for the D70
1 Turn the camera on
2 Press the MENU button and select Firmware Ver. in the setup menu.
3 Two firmware versions (A and

will be displayed. Confirm that the B version is 1.02 or earlier.
4 Turn the camera off.
Download and extract the new firmware
1 Create a new folder on the hard disk and name it as desired.
Position the mouse cursor over an empty space on the desktop and click the right mouse button. Select New > Folder to create a new folder on the desktop. Name the folder as desired.
2 Download the file �d70v103.exe� to the new folder.
Position the mouse cursor over the Click here to agree to the License Agreement and START download link above and click the right mouse button. Select Save target to file and choose the folder created in Step 3 -1. The file �d70v103.exe� will be downloaded to the new folder.
3 Run �d70v101.exe� to extract the firmware update.
Double click the d70v101.exe icon in the new folder. An install dialog like that shown below at right will be displayed. Click Browse... and select the folder created in Step 3-1. Click OK to install the update software in the selected folder.
If installation is completed successfully, the folder �D70 Update� will be created in the new folder. The folder �D70 Update� will contain the following files and folders:
release.txt: Details the changes made with the release of firmware version 1.03
firmware.bin:
BD700103.bin: Camera B firmware

Copy the firmware to the memory card
The firmware can be copied to the camera memory card either by connecting the computer directly to the D70 using the USB cable, or by removing the memory card from the camera and inserting it in a CF card reader.
Direct USB Connection
1 Turn the camera off and insert the formatted memory card into the D70.
For information on formatting memory cards, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the D70.
2 Set the USB option in the camera setup menu to Mass Storage.
For information on the USB option and connecting the camera to a computer, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the D70.
3 Turn the camera off and connect the USB cable as shown below.

4 Turn the camera on.
If Nikon View or PictureProject has been installed on the computer, the Nikon Transfer window will start automatically and display the message, �There is no image in the camera or on the card. Exit from the program.� Click OK to exit Nikon Transfer.
5 Copy the firmware to the memory card.
1. Copy the firmware to the removable disk corresponding to the camera.
When the camera is connected and turned on, a new �Removable Disk� icon will be displayed in My Computer. Copy �BD700103.bin� (B firmware) from the �D70Update� folder to this removable disk.
Drive letters may differ
2. When copying is complete, confirm that the removable disk contains the �BD700103.bin� (B firmware).
6 Disconnect the camera.

Compact Flash (CF) Card Reader
1 Connect the card reader to the computer.
For more information, see the documentation provided with the card reader. If copying the Firmware Upgrade to memory card, do not use a Lexar Media JumpShot USB cable as the D70 Firmware Update may not be performed correctly
2 Insert the formatted memory card into the card reader.
If Nikon View or PictureProject has been installed on the computer, the Nikon Transfer will start automatically and display the message, �There is no image in the camera or on the card. Exit from the program.� Click OK to exit Nikon Transfer.
3 Copy the firmware to the memory card.
1. Copy the firmware to the removable disk corresponding to the memory card.
When the memory card is inserted, a new �Removable Disk� icon will be displayed in My Computer. Copy �BD700103.bin� (B firmware) from the �D70Update� folder to this removable disk.

2. When copying is complete, confirm that the removable disk contains the �BD700103.bin� (B firmware).
3. Remove the memory card.
Right click on the removable disk and select Eject from the menu that appears. Remove the memory card from the card reader.
4 Disconnect the card reader.

Important
Be sure to copy the firmware to the root directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
Update the camera firmware
Should any of the following occur during the update, the D70 could become inoperable:
� The memory card is removed from the camera
� The camera is turned off
� The AC adapter is unplugged or disconnected
� The battery is removed
� The camera is subjected to powerful electromagnetic noise
If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon service representative.
1 Insert the memory card containing the firmware into the D70.
2 Turn the camera on.
3 Press the MENU button and select Firmware Ver. in the setup menu.
4 The current firmware version will be displayed. Press the multi selector down to highlight Update, then press the multi selector to the right.
5 A firmware update dialog will be displayed. Highlight Yes and press the ENTER button to begin the update.
6 From one to five minutes are required to complete the update. Do not perform any operations while the message shown at right is displayed.

8 Confirm that the update was completed successfully.
1. Turn the camera off.
2. Check the camera firmware version as described in Step 2, �Check the current firmware version for the D70.�
3. If the firmware version is 1.03 (firmware

9 Format the memory card.

10 Restore the USB option to its original setting.
